Rough Stock: Star Valley #1 by Dahlia West

Genres:  Romance, Cowboys

Dual POVs

The Blurb:

Welcome to Star Valley, a beautiful yet brutal landscape nestled at the foot of the Grand Tetons, where the Barlows have lived off the land for more than one hundred years.

They’ve fallen on hard times, though, and their survival is in doubt. Bankruptcy looms as dark as the storm clouds that are gathering. All five Barlow sons have gathered at the Snake River Ranch in a last ditch effort to preserve their family’s legacy. As it was a hundred years ago, the mountains will decide their fate.

The last place on Earth ex-barrel racer Rowan Archer wants to be is back in these foothills, where a Barlow broke her heart. But her family’s fallen on hard times as well, and hard times breed hard choices.

She wants to run away, back to Cheyenne, back to safety, but she can’t, and it wouldn’t do any good anyway. No matter how far she gets, she’s got a daily reminder of her painful past with soulful brown eyes, a gap-toothed grin, and questions about how her daddy got “lost.”

Rowan is determined to protect her daughter from the heartache she suffered and she’ll hold off the entire Barlow family with a rifle and a pack of vicious guard dogs if she has to.

No Barlow will set foot on her family’s ranch, not cheating Court who abandoned her years ago, not even his soft-spoken older brother Seth who comes to plead his wild younger brother’s case.

But Rowan’s heart is as hard as the mountains that shelter them all and she vows that she’ll never make the same mistake again.

My Review:

Rough Stock (Star Valley, #1)Rough Stock by Dahlia West

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fantastic! My rating is 5 Stars!!
“Rough Stock” Star Valley #1 is by author Dahlia West. There are currently seven titles listed in this series however only the first three are available for purchase. The fourth is due out this Fall.

Star Valley is a series I am so happy to come across. Since I was unfamiliar with this author, I unashamedly admit it was the cover that sold me! There are a mixed bag of ratings and reviews for it, however it was a Five Star for me. This sexy, romantic, slightly angsty story brought out all my “feels.” Every single one!

As you will read, reasons of morality and strong conscience issues made it difficult for this couple to reach their HEA. Literally, everyone is adding their “two cents.” I admit that if I found myself in a similar situation, I’m not sure what I would have done. Sometimes the right thing is the wrong thing. This story was classic in that way. That said, I was beyond thrilled and not a little relieved by the end.

Welcome to Star Valley, Wyoming and the home of the hot, sexy five Barlow brothers. These ranchers have been falling on hard times thanks to mother nature but they are no less determined to save their land and the legacy that comes with it.

Seth Barlow is the middle brother. He is the quiet one. The one to always be relied on the most. And unfortunately the one who always puts his family’s needs before his own. Over the years, Seth made many sacrifices keeping peace and harmony among his family. Each of his brothers has a strong, unique personality. I fell in love with Seth from chapter one. The author has a talent for letting us live inside her character’s minds. There is plenty of internal monologue with just as much dialogue as a result giving us a steady, smooth flow. I didn’t skip one single page because I was afraid to miss something important.

Our heroine, Rowan, reluctantly returns to town to take care of her father who recently had a heart attack. Not only does she care for all her father’s needs, she is determined to keep their family farm surviving. If not just for financial reasons but so that her four year old daughter will have a legacy. Rowan never ever intended to move back to her family home. And she never wanted to see her ex-boyfriend again. He cheated on her and abandoned her when she most needed him. Rowan hated him then and she hates him even now while determined to keep him away from her. Even if he is one of the sexy Barlow brothers. And especially because her daughter has his same eyes.

When Seth Barlow sees Rowan in town for the first time since she left, he is instantly attracted and it seems he can’t stay away from her. And he should since she is his brother’s ex. Even so, Seth is always coming to her rescue even if she doesn’t want or need him too. Even if he’s not the Barlow she hates.

These two have a long journey ahead of them. The road to their happiness is brimming with obstacles; the biggest being Court, Seth’s youngest brother and man Rowan wants nothing to do with.

This is not Court’s story however he was a big part of it. He has a lot of mistakes to make up for and just as much growing up to do. I am looking forward to his book.

Everything about this book was amazing to me. It was a great beginning to this series. Dahlia West has become one of my favorite authors and I am excited to read the rest of the Star Valley series. Yes the Barlow brothers are yummy! (even Court)

Ride-along: Bounty County Series Book 1 By Maren Lee

Genres:  Romance, Erotica, Suspense, Hot Cops, Menage

Alternate POV’s (Mostly H/h with a few paragraghs here and there from secondary characters)

The Blurb:

Chloe Tisdale is a fun-loving woman with a crappy job, no current prospects for romance, and the apparent inability to listen to instructions from demanding men. After a run-in with a creepy stalker, she heads for Imminence, Montana to hide out and party with her wild, foul-mouthed cousin. Conveniently for Chloe, her cousin’s husband just happens to be the Sheriff of Bounty County. Unfortunately for Chloe, however, one of the Sheriff’s deputies is the easy-on-the-eyes-but-incredibly-bossy Justin Hunt, who broke Chloe’s heart into a thousand pieces just one year earlier. And unfortunately for everyone in Bounty County, Chloe’s stalker follows her to Imminence. Despite dealing with commitment issues, when Justin learns of the danger that Chloe is in, he immediately steps in to protect her. Will sparks fly again? Will Justin learn to love? Can Chloe ever forgive him?

This book has a high heat index, contains adult themes, and is suitable only for 18+.

Ride-along is the first in the Bounty County series; each book in the series is stand-alone with an HEA ending, but characters and story lines for future books may be introduced, so the series is meant to be read in order.

Ride-alongRide-along by Maren Lee

4.5 Stars!!!! to “Ride-along” by author Maren Lee!

First I’m going to assume that this is the first book by this author as I haven’t seen any other books listed on Goodreads. That being said, I loved it! The writing was well done. Maren’s characters were sexy and witty with realistic and sometimes outrageous dialogue. I laughed often at some of the things that came out of there mouths. Filters? Nope! The pace of the story was fairly steady with just a bit of a drag in the beginning pages. There was suspense going on throughout the entire book in the way of a psychopathic stalker. Our couple, Justin and Chloe, had a lot of alone time drawing them emotionally closer despite the fact they insisted on keeping things casual. In fact, they were rarely apart. I would have liked a break from their togetherness now and then, hoping for more stalker action which basically stayed in the background until the last 20% or so of the book. Hey, not complaining, just stating. But when that plot headed to its turning point? I couldn’t sit still! Wow! As I read I became frantic and panicked as badly as Justin. And that was bad! I loved seeing Justin’s reaction to the danger Chloe was in. He was a mess. And if I doubted his love for Chloe, his reactions totally proved me wrong. Truthfully this was my favorite part of the book and that says a lot because I loved “Ride-along!” Have I read this trope before? Yes, many times. However this book was hands down the best I’ve read in a while. I know we all have that author where their style appeals to each of us. And we don’t all have the same opinions. But Maren Lee had me enthralled. That being said, you may be wondering why I only awarded 4.5 out of 5 stars? There were quite a few editing errors. 😦 There were enough that my reading paused several time to re-read sentences interrupting the flow. So that’s my only complaint.

Chloe Tisdale was a likable character. She was intelligent, sexy, impulsive and had no problems saying things that would have most of us blushing. However, she was a bit immature a times. Chloe did a poor job with taking her own safety seriously and as a result she made some poor choices. Chloe and Justin had history. One year prior he broke her heart. Crushed it! I wish Chloe would have made Justin work a little harder for her attention. I love a groveling Hero.

Justin was written well. OMG, he was a hot cop with a perfect physic and such a dirty talker. What a panty melter! From the first pages I knew he was book boyfriend material. Okay. Now I have to admit to one tiny thing about him that had me occasionally frowning. I like dominance in my heroes but Justin was downright bossy sometimes.

Justin and Chloe took insta-lust to sexy, sensual level. They could not keep their hands off each other. It may have started as lust but there was a base for more and I loved watching their lust turn into love. Especially with Justin.

There were secondary characters that I loved. As a matter of fact, I believe Jake and Lane’s story is in the works. Yea!

Maren, if you ever read this review, I’d like to ask you if there is a possibility for a prequel? I would love to read Sierra and Brandon’s story. I loved those two. Sierra is outrageous!

I definitely have this author on my watch list!

Watch MeWatch Me by Ada Frost

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Amazing! sexy! Funny! I can’t stop smiling! 5 Stars!!!!!
“Watch Me” by author Ada Frost was the first book I have read by this author but it won’t be my last! I became an instant fan. The sad part? I don’t know if or when I would have read this if I didn’t come across it in a blog post. Thank you Dali at TJlovestoread-Romance blog! And after I read a number of positive reviews I was hooked further.

Lawson Stone is a totally unlikable man. He’s hard and unsmiling but I loved him anyway. He is the epitome of arrogant and sometimes he was just plain mean. Lawson didn’t care about much. Didn’t need friends. The only people he cared for in his life could be counted on one hand, including his business partner and best friend Samuel. (Oh I hope he gets a book soon!) This affection excludes Lawson’s father however. Lawson was a businessman through and through. He was anal, insistent that things goe his way. “My way or the highway!” As a result, his employees kept there distance and their opinions to themselves. All but one that is…

Abigail Warner, Abby. I adored her. She had gumption and confidence and didn’t let anyone put her down. Unfortunately Abby was in a financial hole, a deep one. She needed a job desperately. When her cousin finds her a job as a secretary to her boss, Abby is thrilled however nervous at the same time. You see being Lawson Stone’s secretary is not a job with longevity for a good reason. Lawson is a pain in the arse and needs to be put in his place. Luckily, Abby has never had a problem speaking her mind. In fact, she has absolutely no filters, doesn’t think before she speaks. Oh God, she was funny! I loved how she could dish right back anything Lawson through at her.

Lawson hates Abby! Abby hates Lawson! And yet they are insanely attracted to each other!

What I liked most about this book was watching the changes Lawson experienced. He was terrified of his feelings for Abby and at the same time he was terrified of losing her. His change wasn’t quick. The author did a great job of steadily developing Lawson’s character. It was realistic and endearing watching him reach out of his comfort zone. And even then he wasn’t perfect. But he was perfect for Abby.

I love reading reading stories like this one. I enjoy a strong, imperfect Hero and a Heroine who doesn’t take any nonsense from him. A Hero that works for his true love is the one I love the most. The one most deserved of a HEA.

I want to quickly add, incase some of you are concerned about the aspect of pornography. In no way does it interfere, hurt or hinder the H/h relationship. In my opinion this was basically the business side of porn and not once was I disgusted by it. In fact I surprisingly learned a few things…..about the business side of course! 🙂

Branding The Virgin by Alexa Riley

Genres:  Romance, Erotica, Cowboys, Instalove, Novella

Dual POVs

Mary-Jane wasn’t looking for drama. All she wanted was a family of her own, so she decided to make that happen. A mix-up at the sperm bank leaves her with a baby in her belly, but the father is none the wiser.

I totally loved this sweet sexy story!
5 Stars!!!!! to “Branding The Virgin” by Alexa Riley

Dual POVs

“Branding The Virgin” by Alexa Riley is another short, sexy, sweet story of insta-love with a Hero so determined to have his girl. I admit that even though I haven’t read all the Alexa Riley books, they are on my TBR. I have read at least a dozen. This is an author I have been grabbing on or near release day lately. And this novella was perfect!

Mary Jane, or MJ as she likes to be called, has given up hope at ever finding her dream man. She is ready for a family and she wants a baby with or without the man of her dreams. MJ was done waiting! She gets artificially inseminated. MJ is so happy to be pregnant. That is until she finds out about a mix up in the clinic. Unfortunately MJ is unintentionally pregnant by a man who is certainly not the one of her dreams. Sadly, she had to tell him.

Ty, a super, sexy cowboy. Sadly, he was also a gruff and grumpy cowboy. When MJ comes to his ranch as a hired employee, Ty is instantly attracted. And yeah that is a real shocker for him because he gave up hope a long time ago that he would find his HEA because of a bull riding accident.

Nevertheless Ty knows in his heart that MJ is his happy ending and there is no way he’s letting her get away. Not ever! No way! Not happening!

Even if she has a secret…a big one!

Ty has a younger sister and two sexy brothers and I pray Alexa Riley will give them their place in insta-love history. 😉

3.5 Stars!! to “His Midnight Bride” Millionaire Cowboys Six, by Jenn Roseton.
Dual POVs

This is the last book in this series; it features youngest, but no less sexy, brother Rem Coltson and the woman he wants, April Larch.

This was a wonderful sweet series and I hate that it’s over. I have enjoyed all the brothers’ stories. My favorite was “His Tempting Bride.” This last novella was my least favorite but I stilled enjoyed it.

April is an assistant professor of History and to say she is a history nerd is an understatement. When she comes across some mysterious clues at her late grandfather’s house, she immediately has questions. Ones she can’t answer herself. The clues reference to a specific item that she is not too familiar with. However she knows of someone who might be able to help.

Rem is a rancher, however he has a huge passion for history. He is very intelligent and actually could have been a university professor if he wished that career but Rem loves ranching. When April shows up unexpectedly one late night, Rem in unprepared for the instant attraction he has upon seeing the beautiful, intriguing April at his door.

What follows is a fun and suspenseful adventure as they follow clue after clue that they find together. A treasure hunt, so-to-speak. The author did a great job integrating the historical aspect, blending light suspense with romance. I would not call this book angsty at all. Slightly mysterious? Yes.

Rem and April’s romance developed slowly. Rem was a strong character, well developed and intelligent as well as cowboy sexy. April was just okay for me. Her constant insecurities were a bit much and she let that take too much control of her life.

All that being said, I enjoyed this book as well as the series and I’m sad that it’s over. I look forward to what Jenn Roseton comes out with next.

Genres:  Contemporary Romance, Erotica, Novella

The Blurb:

Trace Meyers doesn’t do relationships. Never has and never will. All he wants is a good time and he has no problem walking away from a satisfied woman. And they are always satisfied. Too bad he can’t stop thinking about her.

Sophie Burke feels an instant connection with Trace the minute she lays eyes on him. She’s not fooled by the act he puts on for those around him.

She may be inexperienced but she’s not stupid and she knows deep down he must feel it too.

She’s running out of patience and he’s running out of reasons to stay away.

A chemistry like theirs could ignite a passion and need that neither of them have ever experienced before.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 Stars!!!! So sweet and sexy! “Worth The Risk” Blue Falls Two by Stella James.

*I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review*

“Worth The Risk” is the second in the Blue Falls series. Stella James is a fairly new author and this book is her second as well. This fast, steady-paced story with likable characters and little to no angst features the story of Trace and Sophie. I say “little angst” because each time a conflict arose, it was resolved quickly enough to satisfy me each time. As with most novellas, because they are so short, we don’t expect a lot of back story. So of course expecting none I was pleasantly surprised. The author gives enough to paint a small picture of the past. I was able to understand and connect better to Sophie and Trace as a result of this. Their personalities and emotions made more sense that way.

In this story our couple got together pretty quickly and throughout the story I kept waiting for that proverbial “ball” to drop and tear them apart. But as I said earlier, any conflicts that arose were resolved quickly enough but still giving the factors of concern, and then satisfaction with a smile.

Sophie…from the beginning I mistakingly assumed she would be a timid character with dependency issues. (You’ll have to read to find out why) But Sophie was anything but. She was bold, assertive and determined to get her man!

Trace……my favorite character. Not just because he was sexy, gorgeous and tatted. Of course that was a perk! Trace had an alpha personality, yes, still he was extremely sensitive to Sophie’s feelings. With Sophie, Trace could let his guard down. It was he who I worried would not have his HEA.

“I wanted to ruin Sophie for any other man but I’m pretty sure she just ruined me.”

The supporting characters, two of which featured in the previous book: Lily and Cole, were a nice addition to the story. Mona was ballsy and funny and her story is told in the next book, “Clipped.” And thens there’s Kate. We have gotten a couple of teasers in the first two books about her story which is titled “Worth The Fight.” I think I am anticipating Kate’s story the most.

All that being said, I smiled a lot, especially toward the end. Trace is definitely “book boyfriend” material. I totally recommend this book to anything looking for a quick sexy read and a satisfying HEA. I loved the epilogue…..

Caribou’s Gift: Kodiak Point Book 3.5 by Eve Langlais

Genres:  Romance, Shifter, Novella, Christmas

Dual POVs

The Blurb:

Damn it, a man had his pride and a caribou a certain majestic presence, all of which could wind up ruined if he abased himself to play a simple-minded reindeer in the town’s Christmas parade.

No way was he wearing damned tinsel in his antlers.

Like hell was he sporting a red nose and pulling a sleigh.

But he changes his mind when he meets the woman in charge of the event.

Single mom, Crystal, is doing her best to offer her daughter the best Christmas ever. It’s their first in Kodiak Point, and she’s not about to let some vain jerk ruin it for her little girl.

If playing dirty is what it takes…then bring on the Christmas games. As Crystal and Kyle butt heads—and lips—they discover more than goodwill this holiday season. They’re gifted with a second chance at love.

My Review:

Caribou's Gift (Kodiak Point, #3.5)Caribou’s Gift by Eve Langlais

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

So cute! 4 Stars!!!!
“Caribou’s Gift” Kodiak Point Book 3.5 is by author Eve Langlais, an author I recently discovered. I love her books so far and this series is great. Full of suspense, mystery, and romance with hard and emotionally bruised heroes. However this book is lighter. A sweet Christmas story that gives a break to the drama going on in Kodiak Point.

Told in dual POV’s

So as I was saying…in “Caribou’s Gift” we revisit friends from the previous books; this one is lighthearted, humorous, romantic and a fun, sweet read. For the one hundred pages that is this cute story, we have none of the continuing drama that has been seen in prior books of the series. No explicit danger or drama. I will say there is a tiny bit of suspense toward the end, just enough to add to the story in an emotional way.

This sweet Christmas story features Kyle, a caribou shifter, and the woman he wants to make his. Crystal is a cougar shifter. To add even more sweetness to this book is Crystal’s precious little daughter, Gigi.

As soon as Kyle and Crystal meet, sparks fly. Not all good either. Crystal is in charge of the town’s Christmas parade and when Kyle refuses to play “Rudolph” red nose and all, Crystal is not happy. Of course Kyle tries to get back in her good graces except he still refuses to wear a red nose and have his antlers decorated. What follows is fun and romance and one determined Caribou to have his cougar. But not only does Kyle want Crystal, he realizes he wants Gigi too. Nothing is going to stop this sexy shifter from having his family!

Even though this was a short, quick read, I loved it. Eve’s characters are well developed for a novella. I smiled, I teared up and I fell in love with little Gigi along the way. What’s not to love? She was adorable. This was a great addition to the Kodiak Point Series even though it didn’t have all the danger and suspense.

Poor Gene. After the pain and betrayal he suffered in the war all he wants is revenge against the brothers who left him behind. But he’s confused when instead of wanting to punish him for his evil acts, they offer him forgiveness.

My Review:

Polar Bared (Kodiak Point, #3)Polar Bared by Eve Langlais

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4.5 Stars! “Polar Bared” Kodiak Point #3 by Eve Langlais is the third book in this series. Here we have a sweet love story, one I was so excited to read. This one is about a revenge seeking polar bear shifter, Gene and the adorable, geeky, curvy human woman he can’t seem to get away from. A perfect example of “opposites attract.”

Without giving too much away , I need to say Gene was set on a journey of revenge, not caring who was in the path to it. We meet Gene for the first time in “Kodiak’s Claim,” book one in the series. Gene makes another appearance in the second book as well, “Outfoxed By Love.” When I found out the third book was his story, I was already plotting where to hide and lock myself away. If you think Gene was an angry character, try getting in my way when I’m in my “Oh damn I have to read this now! Stay the Hell away!” mood. There are some books that just need to be read that way.

As bad tempered as Gene was, he had a near instant soft spot for Vicky, his “Pima.” (Sorry you’ll just have to read for yourself to find out where that nickname came from.) No matter how many times he came to Vicky’s rescue (she needs plenty of rescuing) 🙂 Gene keeps pushing her away.

Gene has revenge to plan and the last thing he needed was a distraction in the form of his adorable, geeky Pima.

Vicky was in danger. Not from Gene, although he’d argue that she was. The danger that follows her isn’t even from the continuous attacks to Kodiak Point. Vicky has her own trouble following her. And while that danger is in addition to the Kodiak issues, Gene must put his plans for revenge aside to protect Vicky. Will Gene ever take a chance on the love Vicky wants to give him? Will he put away his need for revenge and let himself be happy? Gene was a complex, tortured character and I completely understood why he felt the way he did. I understood his actions and I forgave him for his past evil deeds.

Vicky was adorable, quirky and she made me laugh out loud. A wealthy widow with no real friends or family. Her fascination with the arctic, particularly polar bears, brings her in close contact with Gene. Or should I say, Gene’s bear. Vicky was afraid but there was also the factor of awe and wonder that she came so close to the bear and wasn’t eaten. Vicky was funny. She was also caring and compassionate. Vicky easily fell in love with Gene despite his gruff and grumpy nature. She loved him before she knew he was a bear. Watching Gene and Vicky fall in love was sweet and endearing. I was especially happy for Gene. He never believed that anyone could love him the way he was. Watching his walls come down, one by one, made me love him even more. Of all the Kodiak Point shifters, I truly believed Gene deserved his HEA the most.

The next in the series (after the Christmas novella, “Caribou’s Gift”) is “Wolf’s Capture,” where we are even closer to the true enemy of Kodiak Point!
